Summer Fun in Small Spaces

This was such a great impromptu portrait session! I was excited to do it, and now I’m even more excited to share it! In the past, I’ve taken portraits of my friend Genna to test out new techniques and equipment, while exploring beautiful landscapes. This time, instead of going to a place with an abundance of natural splendor, I decided to take on the challenge of taking portraits in tighter spaces, where I might have to cut out or work to avoid distractions in the background.

Can you tell that we’re in a tiny area between a house and a road, in the middle of a yard that’s full of kids’ toys? Can you tell that I even took some of these with a wiggly baby in one arm? Or that for some of these, we were about 3 yards from a Con-Ed crew that was digging up the lawn?

I also took the opportunity to experiment with some different editing styles. My usual style, as far as color-correction, is vibrant, true-to-life colors. You may notice a lot of photographers these days using a “desaturated” or “moody” style that slightly skews the colors of a photo to be more of a muted tone, and sometimes a bit of a golden hue is added as well. So I figured, why not try out some of that in these portraits? View more of this session in my Flickr portfolio!

NYBW Spring Minis 2019!

Wow, this year is just flying! (Or is it just me?) A few months back, my baby girl (AKA “Little Apprentice”) got to tag along for her very first photoshoot! It was the Spring Mini-Sessions for New York Babywearing! What better way to introduce her to Mommy’s work? Here she is, appropriately dressed in her camera bib (handmade by me!)

This round of Minis was fantastic, and different in a few ways from the other Minis I’ve done for NYBW. First, I got to document the growth of one adorable family that had a beautiful new baby since I’d last photographed them at the Autumn Minis! And with these being fundraisers for NY Babywearing, it’s only fitting that I catch some babywearing in action! First, on a snuggly newborn, and then with a toddler!

It’s a great example of how babywearing makes babies (of all ages) feel safe and comfy!

NYBW Mini Sessions 2018!

This 15 minute mini session day is becoming a fun Autumn tradition! For just $50, each participating family gets a 15-minute photoshoot and 5 digital photos. I think it’s such a great way to get a few quick and easy photos for your holiday cards, while supporting New York Babywearing (formerly Babywearing International of Rockland/Westchester)! Last year, it was an incredible whirlwind of adorable families, so I was psyched to be invited to do it all again this year!

I must admit I was a little nervous about being 8 months pregnant and getting through the shoots without muscle pain or getting dehydrated. When I work with kids, I tend to get down on their level and kind of squat-run to keep up with the ones that are especially energetic. (Fortunately, that turned out to not to be an issue! Phew!)

The issue I had was the weather forecasts! Oh my goodness. Photographers and weather forecasts: a tale as old as time. OF COURSE the day before the sessions, the forecast called for rain- and only in the timeframe that I would be taking photos. And every weather source I checked said that the rain would stop at a different time.

Long story short, I spent the day before (and early morning the day-of) the shoot moving things around and fretting over what to do if the rain didn’t stop in time. With a last minute location change to a spot with rain cover, we were all set to go!

Although it was absolutely freezing and pouring when I arrived on location, the rain stopped and the sun started to peek out by the time my first family of the day arrived! And it continued to get warmer and sunnier from there!

I am just in love with the beautifully even overcast lighting that we got. It was such a gorgeous day for cozy Autumn family portraits, and I honestly could not have asked for cuter families or happier babies to work with!

And a BIG HUGE thank you to my sister-in-law, Lex and baby Willa for assisting me through the day!!

The Queen, Part One: Monochrome Monarch

Hold. The. Phone.

Have you seen these pictures yet???

Needless to say, I am overjoyed with the results from my first styled, “fantasy-inspired” photoshoot! My model, Emma, is (quite obviously) no stranger to modeling, however this was her first outdoor photoshoot- so this was an exciting new project for both of us!

This shoot had gotten postponed once due to April being a Northeastern snowpocolypse. Glad that’s over! And I’m so glad our snow-date worked out! It was an overcast day, but it worked out beautifully for us.

I cannot thank Emma enough for not only doing all of her own styling- oufits, makeup, hair- but also for making that gorgeous flowers & spikes halo crown. She totally brought her A-game.

The inspiration for this shoot came from wanting to capture a strong female presence, somewhere along the lines of a warrior and a Queen.

This is the beginning of a new creative project that I am extremely excited about. It will be an ongoing process, as I fiddle with different editing techniques, just for the fun of it! I’m starting out with just a few monochrome images, but there will absolutely be more to come! My creativity is overwhelmed in the best way!

Over the Rainbow & Over the Moon

We just have so much to celebrate these days! I recently posted about my nephew’s first birthday, and here we are again, celebrating yet another new member of the Fitz family!

Last week I posted a couple of outtakes/behind-the-scenes photos from the gorgeous autumnal family photoshoot I did with my brother Dan’s family. I’ve gotten to document so much of their story, and I was so happy to be a part of their very special announcement too.

And here it is…(with behind-the-scenes footage of our session!)…

Oh my, becoming an Aunt never gets old…not even the ninth time! 😉

Autumn is the perfect time for family portraits! Everything’s so sun-kissed and beautifully colored, and holiday cards will be going out so soon! (If you haven’t booked your Fall session yet, there’s still time!)

A little creative editing to celebrate Dan and Lex’s rainbow baby!

Happy Birthday, Cooper!

My nephew Cooper just turned one, and it makes my heart so very happy that I’ve gotten to photograph so much of his first year!
I photographed his mama anticipating his arrival…

I was so psyched when this photoshoot was featured by Rock & Rollick in their blog series Rockin’ The Bump! (See more on Facebook and Flickr)
Then some sweet ‘Fresh 48’ photos…
(More on Facebook and Flickr)
We also had a shoot for his birth announcement. I wrote about the editing process of his announcement photo here.

And in the blink of an eye, he’s demolishing his birthday cake!
You can see the official smash video (and catch a glimpse of my camera and the top of my head) over on The Fitzgerald’s YouTube channel

And just like that, his first trip around the sun is complete! Happy Birthday, munchkin!

C&W’s Gorgeous Summer Wedding

I recently shared a bit from this lovely couple’s cute Hudson Valley Engagement Session…and here it is, THE BIG DAY!

It was, of course, a big day for me as well! This was my very first wedding photography gig, and it couldn’t have been better! I was fortunate enough to be working with a really wonderful couple, so it was a really great experience from start to finish.

But first, let’s rewind a bit. Back when I met with Chrissy and Will for their engagement session, I noticed a lot of vintage autos driving around. Also, it poured for about 5 minutes as soon as I arrived. Like heavens-opened, buckets and buckets, pouring. They explained that there was a car show that day, and the old joke around town was “It always rains on the car show”.

…Then they told me that they hadn’t realized it, but their wedding happened to be scheduled on the same date as the biggest car show of the year.

Me, about to photograph my first wedding! Cool as a cucumber…

Naturally, as the day approached, I began checking about 4 different forecasts periodically. I prepared for rain, and hoped for sunshine. The only thing the weather sources agreed on seemed to be that there would be some rain at some point during the day, and it would start as soon as the bride came walking down the aisle. (Because, of course…)

The day finally came, and the weather could not have been prettier. No clouds, just sweet summer sunshine. Exactly what you would want for an outdoor summer wedding.

Not a drop of rain fell the entire day.

BTS- Getting some shots out in the woods!

Oh, and speaking of “as soon as the bride came walking down the aisle”, did I mention that she did so to the Jurassic Park theme song? Yeah. How cool is that?

There were personal touches everywhere you looked. For starters, it was held at the same venue where Chrissy’s parents had celebrated their wedding reception. And the ceremony was officiated by the Mother-of-the-Bride herself! How great is that for “full-circle”?

I was totally in awe of the DIY details that transformed this pavilion space into a gorgeous reception hall.

As the sun went down, the dance floor went from catching the golden sunset to glowing with candles and twinkle lights. And all throughout, I was snapping away at friends and family having an absolute blast, playing games and dancing the night away.

The closing number of the night? The Ghostbusters theme song. 100% my kind of party.

I had so much fun at this wedding, and every time I sat down at my computer to work on retouching the photos, I felt like I was reliving the good times over and over again!

My absolute favorite shot. Such infectious joy!

There were so many creative personal touches and beautiful details that went into this wedding and I’ve decided to share them in their own post. You won’t want to miss it, so make sure you’re following along on Instagram and Facebook for the latest updates!

C&W’s Engagement Session

Meet Chrissy and Will, a really fun couple with Hudson Valley roots. A few months back, I had the pleasure of capturing their engagement portraits!

For the location, they chose a place filled with memories, that they had both enjoyed visiting when they were growing up . I was so excited to find that it had a ton of greenery, gorgeous views of the Hudson River, and plenty of room to play! Despite patches of rain and generally overcast skies, this shoot was full of lighthearted fun and excitement for the big day ahead!

My favorite shots turned out to be the in-between moments (as is always the case for me, honestly). If I suggested a pose (or if someone happened to find a giant flower pot that they just had to jump into…) I would snap away while they played around with it, often making each other laugh in a way that you just can’t pose.

I was honored to also be their wedding photographer! Keep your eyes peeled for my post about their wedding! It’s coming soon, and it is fantastic! Follow along on Instagram and Facebook to keep up to date!

Week 3: Growth

This week’s [unintentional] theme was “Growth”.

First of all, look how big this little dude is getting. (Didn’t I JUST take his Mama’s maternity photos, like, yesterday?)

And this week’s #TBT went back just 1 year, to this Autumn portrait session I did with a friend last November. This session was done on my older camera, and I was just starting to play around with some new techniques. I’m still loving how these photos came out, and when I look back on them I can see all of the ways that my photography style has grown and taken shape since then.

Today, November 18th, is Brene Brown‘s birthday! I am a huge fan of her work, so I was delighted to learn that her birthday is the day before mine! So this one’s about growing up and personal growth. If you’re looking for something thought-provoking/inspirational/perception-shifting to read this winter, I highly recommend Daring Greatly and Rising Strong.

I’m taking this weekend off from NaPhoPoMo to celebrate my birthday and think about how RFP is going to be growing even more in 2017! See you next week!

And don’t forget to book your session by November 26th (Small Business Saturday) to get 20% OFF!
